Police in Mombasa were on Wednesday morning forced to use teargas to disperse United Democratic Alliance supporters who had gathered within the town.

In a video seen by the Star, the supporters who were having a peaceful procession with banners dubbed "form ni peace" were stopped by the police and asked to go to their homes.

They also donned UDA-branded caps and T-shirts.

"Kila mtu aende zake. Watu waende nyumbani," a senior police officer leading the team is heard telling the protestors.

Soon after a brief conversation with the leaders of the procession, an officer released a teargas canister dispersing the UDA supporters who were still gathered around, despite agreeing to leave.

The procession was seemingly to counter the demos planned by Azimio la Umoja leaders in the county.

Some UDA leaders had called on their supporters to also turn out in numbers to counter Azimio.

On Tuesday, UDA leaders in Mombasa said they would counter the planned three-day demonstrations called by Azimio leaders in the county.

Led by UDA national vice chair Hassan Omar, the leaders said they had learnt through intelligence where most of the action would be.

Some of the areas earmarked for the demonstrations included; Bangladesh slums, Majengo, Maweni, Tudor and Kisauni.

“You see these areas are densely populated with poor people. They are using poor people for their own selfish interests,” Omar said.

Omar said they want to ensure Mombasa is not destroyed by leaders who have been in the county’s leadership for the last 15 years.

He called on elected leaders in Mombasa to focus on building the county and not destroying it.
