Learners sent back home over safety concerns

A spot check by the Star revealed most schools in Kangemi, along Juja Road and Kibra abandoned learning.

Several schools in Nairobi were forced to send back children home over safety concerns.

A spot check by the Star revealed that most schools in Kangemi, along Juja Road and Kibra abandoned learning amidst rising tension.

Learners at Dr Kiboro Primary and Junior School along Juja Road who had reported on Thursday were released around 10.30 am.

A teacher who spoke to the Star at the school gate said the decision was necessitated by the rising tension at the nearby Mathare slums.

"Today we had a low turnout, we had to release the students because even as speak tension is all over in the nearby Mathare," the teacher said.

In Kangemi, learners at Kangemi Primary School were also sent home hours after reporting.

The situation was similar in Kibra where several schools remained closed on day two of Azimio-led protests.

On Wednesday, the government ordered the resumption of learning in Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu assuring learners of adequate security.
