How Azimio used social media as 'main stage' of demo updates

They were sharing the flow of events exposing some alleged police brutality scenes.

The use of social media in Kenya has become a major source of news with media also embracing the outlets to break news.

According to Forbes, Social media has become the main source of news online with more than 2.4 billion internet users.

Nearly 64.5 percent receive breaking news from Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Snapchat, and Instagram instead of traditional media.

Use of social media came in handy for Azimio la Umoja One coalition this week as they called for a three-day anti-government protest.

Opposition leaders have been quote-tweeting and resharing updates from the protests using their own accounts.

Azimio leader Raila Odinga had urged Kenyans to come out and join him in demonstrating against the contested Finance Act, 2023.

His unique “Vrooom Vrooom” messages was not a miss, a phrase Raila likes using to indicate that the vehicle ( protests) is about to take off.

"Tomorrow marks the finals of #MaandamanoWednesdayToFriday this week. Zakayo lazima ashuke," Raila said  in a tweet.

Azimio Tv handle on Twitter was also up to the task as they kept sharing areas where the demonstrations were taking place.

They also shared updates on various events including arrests of various leaders.

On Tuesday, Raila's spokesman Dennis Onyango had his house raided and he was 'abducted'  to an unknown destination with his whereabouts unknown up to today

Azimio TV Twitter account shared a video of the account, complete with details of the registration plates of the car he was allegedly whisked away in.

Ugly scenes were witnessed in Mathare on Tuesday as police clashed with protestors.

Azimio did not hesitate to share the flow of events, exposing some police alleged brutality scenes.

In return, netizens engaged the posts expressing their own views from the shared videos or statements.
