Police on Wednesday arrested a man suspected of distributing weapons with an intent to cause violence during the anti-government protests. 

In a statement on Friday, Interior CS Kithure Kindiki said the man was arrested while preparing to distribute the weapons. 

He was found in possession of 14 machetes, 24 swords, 46 rungus, and over 300 sachets of assorted narcotic drugs.

The drugs included cannabis sativa and cocaine.

"Also found with him, were documents describing the distribution of Sh42 million across 11 counties in Nairobi, Central and Rift Valley regions," Kindiki said.

He said a security intelligence conducted established that some of the weapons used during the demos had been supplied by civilian firearm holders and leaders of known criminal gangs.

This has resulted in the launch of an operation to ensure that all licensed civilian firearm holders abide by the relevant directives.

Police have a mandate to regulate, control and manage private gun holders.

Kindiki also said police had intensified crackdown on the suspected criminal gang leaders who have been allegedly inciting their followers to violence.
