Activist Boniface Mwangi has weighed in on the arrest of popular blogger and political commentator Pauline Njoroge.
Njoroge was arrested by Watamu DCI officers, in Kilifi County on Saturday.
Later, a report filed at Watamu Police Station indicated that Njoroge was arrested after she was found to be in possession of tablets suspected to be narcotics.
But Mwangi on Sunday dismissed the narcotics narrative and instead associated her arrest with her vocal nature especially when criticizing the government of the day.
“Pauline’s arrest has nothing to do with any drug possession but her vocal criticism of Ruto’s government. Her arrest is political,” he said.
According to the police report, Njoroge was arrested alongside two others including a driver of a vehicle in which they were aboard.
Njoroge is currently being held at Watamu police station alongside her co-accused Jane Mwangi Nduta and Emanze Jilani, a Giriama male adult who was the driver.
Police claim after intercepting the vehicle which the three were using, a search of the car led to a discovery of a substance believed to be drugs.
Mwangi now claims the same script was used by a previous regime to silence Andrew Mwangura of the Seafarers Association who was a source of information for piracy activity in Somali waters.
Mwangura, according to Mwangi, was the first to report that a hijacked ship Faina in 2008, contained weaponry, including battle tanks meant for South Sudan, not for Kenya, as part of a secret arms deal.
“...For blowing the whistle, Mwangura was arrested and detained in Mombasa for possession of bhang worth Sh200 shillings. The government planted drugs on him to discredit and silence him. Those fake charges silenced Mwangura for a while,” he alleged.
