The Ministry of Interior has announced the resumption of services through the e-Citizen platform.

"We wish to notify the general public that services through the e-Citizen platform (ecitizen.go.ke) have resumed following a regrettable downtime since Sunday, July 23, 2023," a statement reads in part.

It said a probe into the disruption established that it was caused by an attempted hack through Distributed Denial of Service(DDoS) technique.

The Cyber security Response Team said this involved flooding the platform with massive traffic from multiple sources simultaneously.

This overloaded the system and made it unavailable to users.

It echoed earlier remarks by ICT CS Eliud Owalo that the hackers did not access or compromise any data.

"However, no data was accessed or lost during the incident, owing to the comprehensive data protection measures put in place by the responsible agencies," it added.

The ministry assured the public that technical teams are on high alert to ensure that any cyber attacks are evaded.

"We wish to inform members of the public that our technical teams are progressively reviewing the existing protective security controls in a deliberate effort to remain several steps ahead of agents of crime, whose intention is to detract us from the milestones we have made in the digital space," it said.

It also called upon all persons and institutions to ensure that they prioritise cyber security.

"Further, all members of the public, businesses, government institutions, and private entities are advised to enhance their cyber security preparedness and prioritize cyber security as part of the collective responsibility to ensure a safe cyber environment in the country."
