President Uhuru Kenyatta on Friday attended an Azimio event for the first time since handing over power to President William Ruto.

He made the move in the wake of escalating tension with Ruto following a recent raid at the home of his son Jomo by the government.

The presence of Uhuru at the memorial service for the victims of anti-government protests could cause more friction with Ruto.

The former head of state is the chairperson of the Azimio council, the top decision-making organ of the opposition coalition, which has been missing in past key events.

However, a few minutes after 11 am on Friday Uhuru arrived at the SKM center, Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka 's foundation offices to join top Azimio leaders in the requiem service.

The opposition claimed that police killed tens of Azimio supporters during the opposition protests against the government.

Last week, Uhuru signaled he could step in to openly challenge President Ruto's decisions following an alleged raid at his son's Karen home over claims of illegal guns.

"Have you seen me in any of those rallies? I will do everything to protect my family, that I will do," Uhuru said last week after he visited Jomo's home moments after the alleged raid.

This comes at a time when there are reports of an ongoing push to have opposition leader Raila Odinga and Ruto hold talks to end the hostilities and forge a peaceful path for the country.

A big tent has been erected at the SKM centre where the prayer service will be getting underway with a number of choirs invited already pelting Christian lyrics.

Top Azimio leaders including Uhuru, Raila, Kalonzo and Narc Kenya boss Martha Karua will be attending the service that will be led by the clergy.

A number of family members of the alleged victims have also been invited.
