Olgira residents in Rombo Ward of Kajiado County killed three elephants on Saturday after one of the Jumbos killed a two-year child.
The angry residents tracked down the elephants and killed three of them in a span of 30 minutes.
Kajiado South Sub County police commander Kiprop Ruto said one elephant attacked a woman on Friday.
The woman was grabbed by the elephant and her child fell down, with the jumbo crushing the child’s head.
“Angry residents are in the bushes looking for more elephants now, they want to kill more. The mother of the dead two-year-old child has been taken to Loitokitok sub-county hospital for advanced treatment and observation,” Ruto said.
Eyewitnesses said during the raid on the elephants, one moran was grabbed by the jumbo but was saved by his peers who speared it through the heart killing it instantly.
Moses Saruni said the elephants were overpowered as each elephant was confronted by more than 20 morans with spears.
“The three were brought down in less than 30 minutes,” he said.
The sub-county police commander said he spent the entire afternoon talking to the Maasai morans to abandon the search for more elephants.
“We are using the elders, the chiefs and imminent people to talk to the morans, who have sworn to kill all the elephants in the area,” Ruto said.
