The process of recruiting additional beneficiaries to the government’s Inua Jamii Safety Net programme will begin in September.

This is after the Cabinet approved the process in a sitting on Tuesday in what it termed as securing the dignity of all citizens and honouring senior citizens.

A dispatch from the Cabinet said the process of onboarding the new registration of new members will commence on September 1.

The approval comes barely a month after the PS social protection and senior citizens affairs Joseph Motari disclosed the government plan to add 500,000 more elderly and vulnerable Kenyans gradually into the cash transfer programme.

“The Cabinet sanctioned a fresh wave of registration of persons under the Inua Jamii Safety Net Programme of senior citizens, persons living with disability, and vulnerable households,” it reads.

“Currently, the Inua Jamii program benefits 1,233,129 Kenyans, including 353,000 Orphans and Vulnerable Children, 833,129 elderly citizens, and 47,000 persons with Severe Disabilities.”

Towards the end of July, the government released Sh8.3 billion under the programme to cover four months from March to June, with each of the beneficiaries set to receive Sh8, 000.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in June said the “Kenya Kwanza Administration remains committed to supporting the most vulnerable members in the society, who deserve to live a dignified life”.

The DP said that to stem delays that have been seen in the past, Treasury will now release the funds in a timely and predictable manner,  starting June 1.
