A Burundi national who allegedly defrauded his countryman Sh500,000 has been charged with obtaining money by false pretences.

Jonah Habumuremy allegedly made his countryman Gisele Umuguaneza believe that he was in a position to help him start a milk importation business before.

He allegedly committed the offence on May 27 in the Lavington area in Dagoretti Sub County within Nairobi County.

He was charged before Kibera senior Principal magistrate Monica Maroro where he denied the charges.

The accused person was charged with the second count of issuing a bad cheque of Sh525,000 to the complainant contrary to the law.

The accused person through his lawyer pleaded for a lenient bond term on the grounds that he was not a flight risk.

His lawyer told the court that they were trying to settle the matter with the complainant but the complainant's lawyer dismissed the theory saying that there were no such talks in progress.

The prosecution told the court that since the accused person was a foreigner, his passport should be deposited in court.

The magistrate released him on a Sh1 million bond with no cash bail and directed that the matter be mentioned on September 4 for pre-trials.

She also directed that the accused person's passport be deposited in court and be supplied with all the witness statements and documentary evidence that the prosecution will rely on during the entire trial.
