Thirdway Alliance party leader Ekuru Aukot has said that he will move to court to stop any attempts at amending the constitution to create the office of the opposition leader.

According to Aukot, the constitution, which is only 13 years old must be protected.

He went on to state that President William Ruto led the team that opposed the Constitution of Kenya, in 2010.

"I won't be surprised. After all, President William Ruto opposed our CoK 2010 but continues to repeat its benefits. So, he will expediently violate to create such unnecessary offices. Tutakutane kotini. We must protect this," Aukot said.

His remarks come after the President on Sunday announced plans to allocate opposition leader Raila Odinga a powerful oversight office even as a lawmaker drafted a bill to entrench the post in law.

Ruto on Sunday affirmed what he termed as his willingness to enhance oversight of the Executive through the creation of the office of the Leader of the Opposition.

The President said the powerful office would enable the opposition to discharge its oversight mandate within the confines of the law and the Constitution.

Speaking during a church service in Bungoma, Ruto said he is committed to ensuring that the leader of the opposition has a fully functional office funded by the public.

"If they want the office of the leader of the opposition, I am ready so that the government of Kenya funds it so that they can issue statements from morning to evening to criticise the government," he said.

"I have no problem with that because when he says I have not done something, and it is true, I will correct it."

Bumula MP Wanami Wamboka has drafted a far-reaching bill to establish the office of the Official Opposition Leader.

The bill also seeks to create the office of Official Deputy Opposition Leader and provide for the funding of the two institutions based in Parliament.

The Political Parties (Amendment) Bill, 2023 says the office of the Official Opposition Leader and Office of Official Deputy Opposition Leader will be funded by monies from the Political Parties Fund.
