Energy Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir has said that the ministry is yet to restore the Lake Turkana Wind Power plant(LTWP) to the grid.

Speaking on Monday, the CS said that they are trying to find out the cause of the problem.

This is after the country was plunged into darkness due to a power outage on Friday.

Kenya Power attributed the nationwide blackout to a loss of 270MW from LTWP.

"When there is so much demand, you lose so much. The system was basically securing itself by switching off and sometimes it is better for the system to switch itself off than to burn down," he said.

"As we speak today we have not returned the Lake Turkana Wind Power plant to the grid, we are trying to analyse if there was a problem before we bring them back on."

He said that the technical team is sitting and by Wednesday they will have a way forward on what caused the challenge.

However, LTWP distanced itself from the power outage saying they were forced to go offline and stop generation following an overvoltage in the national grid which caused the power plant to go off automatically to avoid extreme damage.

"Lake Turkana Wind Power Plant wishes to assert that it has not caused the current power outage. The conclusion that the grid system overvoltage caused this issue is supported by preliminary reports and analysis undertaken by the relevant independent industry stakeholders," the statement reads.

According to LTWP, at the time the plant was forced to switch off, it was producing 270MW out of the national total of 1,855MW which accounts for 14.6 per cent.
