CS Murkomen inspects JKIA ahead of Africa Climate Summit

He instructed JKIA officials to ensure seamless facilitation of visiting delegates.

Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen on Saturday toured Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for inspection of ongoing renovations.

His visit comes a day before the start of the Africa Climate Summit scheduled to be held at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre  from September 4 to 6.

The summit will see the country host over 30,000 leaders and investors from Africa and beyond include over 25 heads of state and government.

Murkomen said the Transport ministry will ensure seamless facilitation for delegates.

"This morning, I inspected the ongoing works at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in preparation for the upcoming Africa Climate Summit," he said.

"I have instructed the management of Kenya Airports Authority led by the acting managing director and JKIA to ensure that there is seamless facilitation of our visitors to ensure that the Summit is a success."

He said that after the summit, the ministry will embark on major reforms and rehabilitation programmes at JKIA and other airports and airstrips across the country.

Police on Friday warned there would be disruption of traffic flow on major roads and highways before, during and after the summit.

Nairobi regional police commander Adamson Bungei said they have mobilised dozens of security officials to ensure the smooth running of the event.

A section of key roads in Nairobi will also be closed from Monday to Wednesday next week.

At least 3,000 officers including those from National Youth Service have been mobilised to ensure the safety of delegates and dignitaries attending the Africa Climate Summit.

The roads to be affected include Harambee Avenue from Parliament roundabout to Taifa Road junction, Taifa Road from Harambee Avenue junction to City Hall Way junction, City Hallway junction from Holy Family Basilica roundabout to Taifa Road junction, and Parliament Road from Harambee Avenue roundabout to the City Hallway roundabout.

The temporary closure will take effect from 2am Monday, September 4, until 6pm Wednesday, September 6, officials said.
