Music Copyright Society of Kenya CEO Ezekiel Mutua has said that it is time for expelled ODM MPs to break the spell of party captivity, even if it means them losing their seats.

According to Mutua, some of the suspended MPs are some of the best-performing legislators of the 13th Parliament.

He said he believes in fidelity to political parties but one does not have to blindly follow someone to show loyalty.

"People like Prof Ojienda, Mark Nyamita and Jalang'o are some of the best MPs in the current parliament. They should break the spell of party captivity even if it costs them their seats," Mutua said on Thursday.

"I believe in political hygiene and fidelity to political parties but one doesn't have to throw away their brains in order to be loyal."

The MCSK chief executive said the opposition MPs working with the government should not be seen as betrayal.

Mutua said it is wisdom, insisting that development does not come by abusing the sitting president.

"Being friends with the President and collaborating with the government of the day doesn't mean betrayal of the party. It's wisdom reloaded. You don't get development by insulting the President and shunning government," Mutua said.

His remarks followed Wednesday's statement by the ODM party's National Executive Council on the expulsion of five rebel MPs.

The five ousted are Elisha Ochieng’ Odhiambo (Gem), Caroli Omondi (Suba South), Gideon Ochanda (Bondo), Tom Ojienda (Senator of Kisumu County) and Phelix Odiwuor Kodhe (Lang’ata).

The NEC convened by Raila himself came almost a month after the renegade members appeared before the Sihanya-led committee to defend themselves from the accusations of gross misconduct.
