Azimio spokesperson Makau Mutua has insisted that elected leaders who are against the political parties that got them elected must be punished.

Speaking on Friday, Mutua said if this is not done, the country's political parties and its democracy are nothing.

The lawyer insisted that party fidelity is an affair that is not up for discussion.

"An MP, Senator, or elected official who commits political adultery against his party must be decapitated," Mutua said.

"Otherwise Kenya’s political parties and its “democracy” are nonsense on stilts. Party fidelity, as is true in America — where a Democrat remains a Democrat as does a Republican — isn’t negotiable."

His remarks come after Raila Odinga-led ODM through its National Executive Council on Wednesday announced the expulsion of five rebel MPs.

The five ousted are Elisha Ochieng’ Odhiambo (Gem), Caroli Omondi (Suba South), Gideon Ochanda (Bondo), Tom Ojienda (Senator of Kisumu County) and Phelix Odiwuor Kodhe (Lang’ata).

The party also expelled four nominated MCAs from Kisumu county.

"Members facing allegations of violation of Article 11 (1) (e) of the party constitution and section 14A of the Political Parties Act 2011 by openly associating with and supporting activities of a rival political party and opposed lawful decisions/resolutions made by the party organs, be deemed to have resigned from the party," read the statement.

"The party is hereby directed to commence the process of removing them from the register of the party."

The expulsion came almost a month after the renegade members appeared before the Sihanya-led committee to defend themselves from the accusations of gross misconduct.
