  • The delegates' meetings are seen as part of Raila's elaborate game plan to revamp grassroots networks.
ODM leader Raila Odinga is received by Suna West MP Peter Masara at the latter's home in Migori on September 8,2023.

Azimio leader Raila Odinga has arrived in Migori County where he is attending a meeting of Orange Democratic Movement(ODM) party delegates.

The opposition leader is accompanied by Azimio bigwigs alongside DAP-K party leader Eugene Wamalwa and Migori Governor Ochilo Ayacko.

Raila's tour of his Migori turf comes hours after he cracked the whip and expelled rebel MPs who are supporting the Kenya Kwanza administration.

At the meeting are ODM grassroots leaders from across all the constituencies in Migori County.

The delegates' meetings are seen as part of Raila's elaborate game plan to revamp grassroots networks as the party readies for the 2027 polls.

Raila has planned a number of activities in South Nyanza into the weekend to also fend off a frenetic push by Kenya Kwanza to weaken him.

On Sunday, Raila will move to the neighbouring Kisii County where he will hold meetings in Bomachoge Borabu and also attend a church service.

"The party leader will be in Migori on Friday and Kisii on Sunday," confirmed a senior ODM official.

He is also planning to be in Siaya on Saturday.

Raila has embarked on countrywide tours to strengthen grassroots support even as he moves to inject more energy into the ODM leadership.

On Thursday, ODM's National Executive Council made changes to at least six national offices.

Kisii Governor Simba Arati will become the new National deputy chairperson of the party.

He replaces former Kisii county Woman representative Janet Ong'era who defected to UDA.

Catherine Omanyo will become the new deputy secretary general, replacing former Busia Woman representative Florence Mutua.

Saboti MP Caleb Amisi will now become the deputy organising secretary, replacing Zulekha Hassan.

Fatuma Masito will take over as the deputy National Treasurer replacing Ogla Karani.

The ODM boss' tour to Luo Nyanza is politically significant at a time when he is cracking the whip on perceived party rebels whom he has accused of betraying the party.

The trip to Migori comes hours after Raila's ODM party saved two MPs from the county after the party launched its most lethal political weapon to expel renegades.

MPs Mark Nyamita (Uriri) and Paul Abuor (Rongo) were on Wednesday asked to offer an apology to the party and pay a Sh1 million fine each.
