There seems to be little doubt that El Niño weather is around the corner.

It is noteworthy that Nairobi Governor Jonhson Sakaja has unveiled  plans to ensure city folk are cushioned against the effects of the adverse weather.

He will deploy the Green Nairobi team to all 17 subcounties; flag off trucks, fire engines and ambulances to be used between October and January.

His teams will flush drainages all over the city to get rid of mosquitoes.

Experts predict floods in Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru and Naivasha. They have warned that agains above average rainfall will batter large swathes in the next three months.

It is important that other county chiefs emulate Sakaja and put in place action plans to save lives and property.

They better start now even though they are late and set aside resources and prepare emergency response teams for landslides and floods.

Hospitals must be stocked in advance with medicine for water-borne ailments.

The government must move with speed and harness the millions of litres that will, if not tapped, waste into the soil.

Farmers too should exploit the rains and plant crops with short maturing crops.

If bureaucrats decide to ignore the weatherman, the loss of lives and economic devastation will only make the already tough economic times worse.

As the saying goes, a stitch in time saves nine; this country and its government needs to act now before its too late.
