Chief Justice Martha Koome has called on advocates to use Alternative Justice Systems (AJS) and small claims courts to ensure efficient resolution of disputes.
In a statement seen by the Star, the CJ stated that they had rolled out a multi-door approach to dispute resolution including Court-Annexed mediation, Alternative Justice Systems, and Small Claims Courts.
“Alternative Justice Systems and small claims courts are opportunities that advocates should use to ensure efficient resolution of disputes,” Koome said.
The CJ was speaking during a function that she was admitting 224 lawyers to the Roll of Advocates at the Supreme Court on Tuesday.
The event brought the number of advocates admitted to the Bar since Koome assumed office to 4,184.
Koome further stated that several counties and subcounties located in historically marginalised areas still do not have a significant presence of advocates.
“We still have many members of the vulnerable segment of our society including children, persons living with disabilities, victims of sexual and gender-based violence who are often in dire need of legal services, but do not have access to the same,” she said.
The CJ called for efficiency in resolution of commercial disputes to increase the attractiveness of our nation as a desired business destination.Law Society Of Kenya President Eric Theuri was also in attendance.
