National Assembly Deputy minority leader Robert Mbui has said the Kenya Kwanza proposal to extend the presidential term limit to seven years is totally unacceptable.

In an interview with Citizen TV, the Kathiani Member of Parliament said there are a lot of things that need to be analysed and not the term limit proposals.

“If any attempt is made to change the term limit, then the incumbent will be starting off like anyone else and then they will be starting their seven-year term then probably their second-year term,” Mbui said.

“This is totally unacceptable and that is the kind of game that we do not want. These people have so much that we need to look at in the Constitution, but definitely not the issues of a term limit,” he added.

Mbui said the the Azimio party has always been worried even before the elections that the Kenya Kwanza team will attempt to abolish the presidential term limit.

“We have always been concerned about the management of Kenya Kwanza. We were very worried before the last election that if this team must get into office, they probably will want to abolish the term limit and this is an attempt to get into that,” he said.

On Friday, Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei submitted a memorandum to the National Dialogue Committee at the Bomas of Kenya proposing that the current five-year presidential term limit be extended to seven years.

"The extension of the Presidential term of seven years each term for two terms from the current five years to allow stability and pragmatic development in the country," he said
