Couples in Mt Elgon, Bungoma county, have been urged to embrace family planning to ensure maternal and child health.

Health experts say that one third of the maternal deaths can be reduced through the adoption of family planning methods.

Family planning also helps in reducing the economic burden on individuals and families.

Speaking to the Star on Tuesday in Mt Elgon during celebrations to mark World Contraception Day, Phyllis Chebet said since she was introduced to family planning methods has given her with spouse the ability to plan childbirth and space and time pregnancies.

“The primary purpose of family planning is to eliminate unwanted pregnancies and arrive at the optimum number of children the family can afford to take care of,” Chebet said.

Chebet added that the high cost of living has exposed many families to suffering, and called on President William Ruto to make health more affordable.

Dr David Wanikina, the medical superintendent at Bungoma County Referral Hospital, said the contraception day celebrates the power of options in reproductive health where every pregnancy is wanted and planned for.

Wanikina said this year’s theme, 'The power of options', underscores the critical role of access to a variety of contraception methods.

“The ability to control one’s reproductive choices is not only a matter of personal freedom but it is a fundamental human right. It empowers individuals and couples to make informed decisions on how many children to have, contributing to healthier families and communities,” he said.

Bungoma county chief officer for health and sanitation Dr Magirima Mayama reaffirmed that Bungoma is committed to providing access to a wide range of contraceptive choices.

“We must advocate for comprehensive sex education that empowers individuals with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions about their bodies,” she said.

She said the power of options extends beyond individual choices to shape societies and paves the way for a more equitable and prosperous future.

“On this World Contraceptive Day, let us remember that the power of contraception goes beyond the contraceptive themselves. It is about choice, dignity and empowerment. It is also the right to plan one's family and the opportunity to create a bright future for all,” she said.
