President William Ruto has announced that the government is planning to start importing duty-free yellow maize.

The President said the move will help reduce the high cost of living.

Ruto said the government has through the Treasury already allocated cash for the duty-free importation but did not give further specifics of the deal.

"Sehemu ingine tumekubaliana katika budget tumepitisha ya kwamba tutakuwa tunaagiza yellow maize duty-free na tumekubaliana na wizara ya kwamba tunataka kupunguza gharama ya chakula ya mifugo yetu," Ruto said.

This translates to: In other sectors, we have agreed in the budget that we passed we shall consider duty-free importation of yellow maize and have agreed with the ministry that we shall lower the cost of animal feed.

The President further said the government has lowered the price of fertiliser to help farmers to increase food production.

"Apart from lowering the cost of fertiliser, we are looking into the price of other commodities including cotton seeds among others to reduce the cost of living because it is the pragmatic way," Ruto added.

The Head of State said the government will also reduce the cost of animal feeds for farmers.

In August, the Cabinet approved the importation of duty-free yellow maize imports.

The government announced duty-free importation of yellow maize and lifted taxes on animal feeds to ease the cost of meals for livestock.
