The National Police Service has recently been on the spot over corruption cases.

This was acknowledged by the Head of Public Service Felix Koskei saying the vice has been elusive but assured that the current administration will have to end it for future generations.

Kosekei spoke on Friday when he held a consultative engagement with the leadership of the National Police Service.

The meeting brought together over 300 senior officers, led by IG Japheth Koome, DIG, Douglas Kanja, and DCI, Amin Mohamed.

"I reiterated to the officers President William Ruto's clarion call to decisively root out corruption at all levels in government and across the breadth and length of the country," Koskei said.

Speaking during the meeting, National Police Service chairperson Eliud Kinuthia proposed ways in which police can embrace to avoid engaging in corruption.

He said the police commission is committed to working with corruption prevention agencies like the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to ensure zero tolerance for corruption.

He said the agencies will purpose to fully adhere to the Anti-Corruption and Crimes Act 2003; the Leadership and Integrity Act 2012; the Bribery Act 2016; the Public Officer Ethics Act 2003 and a Human Resource manual and Codes of Conduct.

"The Commission is persuaded that the Inspector General in the exercise of his independent command and organization of NPS into command, formations and units; reconsider the past decision on decentralisation of the traffic department in favour of a centralised command of the traffic department with a requirement that all police officers manning traffic and security roadblocks who are not under covert operations to have their uniforms fitted with high definition (HD) body cameras," he said.

Kinuthia added that NPS will minimise corruption-prone points of traffic management and the number of traffic and security roadblocks.

He said corruption will be reduced on the major highways if the proposal sails through.

The chairperson added that it was a recommendation by the Ransley Taskforce to reduce traffic and security roadblocks gradually from over 110 to 40.

He said at the moment, every commander is at liberty to erect a security and traffic roadblock.

Kinuthia said as long as it is within the jurisdiction of command as the police deem fit regardless of changing intelligence, purpose and roadblock log book records and modus operandi of criminal activities.

"The traffic and security roadblocks have become notorious collection points for bribes and corruption," he said.

He added that the commission will strengthen the monitoring and reporting framework of all disciplinary offences.

Koskei called on the officers to conduct themselves with utmost professionalism during police recruitment exercises to reinforce public trust in the fairness of these exercises.
