Analysis of labour market between 2016 and 2022 shows that the employment structure in Kenya has been dominated by informal workers.
According to a report released by Kenya Institute for Public Policy Research and Analysis (KIPPRA), informal workers accounted for 83.4 per cent of total employment in 2022.
Kenya’s wage employees represent 15.7 per cent of total employment, while the category of own-account workers, who are self-employed and/or unpaid family workers is limited and accounts for 0.9 per cent of total employment.
