A new High Court has been launched in Kibera to hasten delivery of justice and clear case backlogs.

Kibera High Court was launched on Monday by presiding judge Diana Kavedza.

Justice Kavedza said the main objective of the court was to bring justice close to the people and to help decongest the busy Milimani High Court.

She promised to work closely with every individual of good will to deliver justice without delay.

“I hope that we will all work as a team to enhance delivery of justice to the people. We shall do our best to avoid backlogs and help people around here get justice,” she said.

The court will hear all appeals from the Kibera chief magistrate courts, the Kahawa Law Courts and the law courts at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

"This means that matters of appeal from these courts will be handled at the Kibera High Court which is now fully operational,” Kibera chief magistrate Ann Mwangi said.

Justice Kavedza previously served as the chief magistrate at the Kahawa Law Courts until her promotion more than a year ago.

She has been at the criminal division of the Milimani High Court until when she was moved to head the newly created Kibera High Court.

Jonah Meroka, Kibera heads of prosecution thanked Chief Justice Martha Koome for allowing the installation of a high court at Kibera.

“This is a huge step in relation to the access to justice, it will now be easy for us to make appeals and help the vulnerable in Kibera and its environs to get justice,” Meroka said.

Meroka said the court will help save time that people used to spend as they wait for their appeals to get through at the Milimani High Court.
