I look forward to more, New UK High Commissioner says after Raila meet

The new British High Commissioner Neil Wigan has said that he looks forward to many more meetings with Azimio leader Raila Odinga.

In a statement on Wednesday, after the two held a meeting with top Azimio la Umoja leaders, the High Commissioner described the meeting as an "insightful first meeting" with the Opposition leader.

He said they talked extensively about Kenyan politics, democracy and the historical relations between Kenya and the United Kingdom.

"Insightful first meeting with Raila Odinga today on democracy and politics in Kenya, and the historical relationship. I look forward to many more meetings," Wigan said on X.

The former Prime Minister in a statement after the meeting said he was pleased to welcome Wigan, as he begins service in Kenya.

Raila said that other issues discussed in the meeting included issues to do with devolution, the ongoing National Dialogue and trade between the countries. 

"We reflected on the long historical ties between Kenya and the UK. He lauded Kenyans for tenacity in the difficult struggle for democracy and a new constitution," Raila said.

"We also touched on devolution, the ongoing bipartisan talks and agreed to renew and strengthen our ties for democracy, stability, trade and investment." 

Neil Wigan was appointed as the new United Kingdom ambassador to Kenya in April. He officially took charge in July.

He replaced Jane Marriott who was moved to Pakistan after having served as British High Commissioner for four years. 

Wigan previously served as British High Commissioner to Israel.
