Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza is now seeking the help of the Senate in resolving the dispute with Members of the County Assembly and other leaders.

In a letter seen by the Star, Mwangaza wants Speaker Amason Kingi to ask that the Standing Committee on Devolution take charge of their peace talks.

"In the spirit of reconciliation and well aware that the Senate Standing Committee in charge of devolution is in a position to mediate over these perceived differences between myself, the Deputy Governor and the County Assembly; I write to you to invite the said Committee to intervene," the letter reads.

In the letter, Mwangaza alleges that all elected leaders in the county are against her, including her Deputy governor Mutuma M'ithinkia.

She claimed that all Members of County Assembly who have shown any support for her continue to be harassed by the Meru County Assembly leadership.

"All members of the County Assembly who have directly expressed their support for my government are being harassed either by the Minority Whip of the Assembly or the Majority Whip.

"This has reached the extent that some of the members have been removed from the sectoral committees of the house," Mwangaza claimed.

This is the second time the Meru governor is running out of favour with MCAs.

Mwangaza is now staring at the risk of being impeached for the second time in just 10 months after 61 out of the county's 69 MCAs expressed support for the ouster bid.

The ward representatives include 27 from President William Ruto's UDA party, 21 from the Devolution Empowerment Party, 10 from Jubilee and three from the National Ordinary Peoples Empowerment Union.

The impeachment motion is being crafted and will be tabled in the assembly anytime.

Last year, the MCAs made a similar move but hit a snag after the Senate saved her from ouster on December 30, 2022.

This was after 67 of the 69 MCAs that were present in the Meru County Assembly impeached her on December 14, on five grounds including abuse of office just 64 days after she assumed office.

Kawira pleaded not guilty to all charges.

The 11-member Senate special committee that was chaired by Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale said none of the allegations levelled against her were substantiated by the MCAs.
