Kenyans on Friday thronged Kericho Green Stadium, to mark Mashujaa Day.

During the 60th celebrations, President William Ruto is expected to launch a Universal Health Coverage (UHC) program in the country.

The programme seeks to ensure affordable health care for all.

Consequently, community health volunteers have expressed their views and expectations on the same.

Speaking to KTN, one lady from West Pokot County hopes that President Ruto will help them meet the health needs at the grassroots.

She said so far, she has created awareness on the need to seek professional help when it comes to health issues, including advising women from going through childbirth at home.

Wanjiku from Kirinyaga, and who has been a Community Health Promoters for almost 30 years is grateful to the President and his government for front-lining health talks.

"Afya letu, jukumu letu (Our health, our responsibility)," a CHPs attending the celebrations told NTV.

The CHPs have expressed hope that the improvement of health care in the communities will help them reach more persons and build trust with the people.

Robinson, another CHP said they will not have to keep on referring patients to higher-level hospitals due to lack of medicine or first aid equipment.

"Kuna changamoto ambazo zinapata mwananchi lakini kwa sababu hatuna vifaa hatuwezi kumsaidia. Mpango kama huu ambao Rais anazindua siku ya leo utasaidia mwananchi kwa sehemu kubwa sana, "Benson Chacha of Migori County said.

Ruto's UHC vision started on Thursday when he signed four bills to change health care in the most radical fashion in 60 years.

The Sh500 billion plan will largely be financed through increased taxes.

The Bills include the Primary Health Care Bill, the Facility Improvement Financing Bill, the Digital Health Bill and the new Social Health Insurance Bill.

These are aimed at providing the legal and institutional framework for a new dawn in our healthcare system.

Speaking during the signing, Ruto noted that the national healthcare journey has been long and at times painful.

"Indeed, most Kenyans have always insisted that healthcare is the public service they want the most; it is the priority," he said.

"Today, we have made a significant step towards making healthcare universal for all Kenyans."
