Azimio leader Raila Odinga and Mama Ida have mourned the death of former Assistant Minister Koigi Wa Wamwere's mother Monica Wangu Wamwere popularly known as Mama Koigi.

On Wednesday, Koigi announced the death of his mother saying she inspired his journey for justice and second liberation.

"I am truly shattered by the demise of our dear mother who was also my heroine and saviour who also inspired my struggle for justice, second liberation, freedom and democracy and supported our independence to the hilt," Koigi said.

In a statement, Raila said that Mama Koigi was a staunch crusader for human rights and one of the champions of Kenya's second liberation.

"Mama Ida and I join the family of former Subukia MP and former Assistant Minister, Hon Koigi wa Wamwere in mourning the death of their mother, Monica Wangu Wamwere (Mama Koigi - as she was popularly known)," the statement read.

Raila said she fought hard for the release of political prisoners during the Nyayo era.

"While two of her sons (Koigi and Kuria) were part of the prisoners, her drive and zeal were not just for the sake of the two, but the entire group that was being incarcerated at Nyayo House and elsewhere in the country," Raila said.

He said that the Constitution Kenya celebrates is part of the fruits of the struggle she withstood together with all the mothers of political prisoners in the early 90s.

Raila said that at the time of her death, she was a resident of Bahati, and he feels obliged to lead all Bahati residents, the people of Nakuru County, and the country at large, in extending condolences to the family.

"May God comfort them during this difficult time. Bahati, Nakuru, and the whole of Kenya have lost a gallant citizen and woman leader. May her soul rest in peace."
