Senator Nyamu demands answers over death of Kimathi primary pupil

The legislator wants the committee to specify the circumstances leading to his tragic death.

Nominated Senator Karen Nyamu now wants the Committee on Education to probe the death of a pupil that allegedly occurred in a school's swimming pool in Makadara.

A grade six pupil Master Harders Kanyora Mutahi of Kimathi Primary School in Bahati, died on October 11, 2023,  allegedly in a swimming pool.

Speaking on the floor of the Senate Assembly, the legislator tasked the committee to specify the circumstances leading to his tragic death and whether it occurred within or outside the school premises.

"Provide a comprehensive report on the school's actions upon confirming the death, the process of notifying the parents, details of incident reporting and immediate responses by the authorities, including the Ministry of Education," she said.

Nyamu also wants the committee to examine claims of attempts to compromise the ongoing investigations as well as allegations of witness coaching, including the possibility of coercion or intimidation of fellow pupils who may have witnessed the events leading to the pupil's death.

According to the Senator, the committee should also investigate allegations of religious discrimination and exorbitant fees charged for remedial teaching in contravention of directives from the Ministry of Education. 

"State any plans the Ministry of Education has put in place to ensure justice is served for the Late Mutahi, including compensation to his parents who have been devastated, both psychologically and financially, by his needless death," she said.

Karen Nyamu added that the committee should outline measures by the school management and the Ministry of Education to ensure the security/safety and well-being of learners within Kimathi Primary School and other such institutions.

"From now on, while looking into the possibility of transferring the siblings of the deceased pupil who may have been traumatized and also afraid of victimization and possible psychological torture."
