The Directorate of Immigration has cleared an additional 16, 821 passport applications and relayed passports to regional centres for distribution in an ongoing Rapid Results Initiative (RRI).

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki said the documents were available for collection beginning Monday, November 6 to November 10, 2023.

It will be the seventh week of the Rapid Results Initiative.

In Nairobi, 9,373 passports will be ready for collection at Nyayo House, 1,787  in Eldoret, 1, 750 in Embu, and 1,500 in Kisii.

In Nakuru, 1,000 passports are ready while 1,552 have been printed and awaiting collection in Mombasa.

In Kisumu, the department said 1,692 passports are ready for collection next week.

Kindiki launched the RRI campaign on September 19, 2023, in a bid to clear a soaring passport backlog amid a crisis at the Immigration Department blamed on a broken printer and corruption.

Initially, there was a backlog of 87,454 passports that were yet to be collected from the Directorate of Immigration headquarters and regional offices.

While issuing a directive for the issuance and delivery of passports during the launch of the initiative, the CS warned that passports must be collected within 30 days of issuance, failure to which they will be disposed of.

He warned that passports that would not have been collected after the expiry of the 30-day notice would be treated as uncollected documents and disposed of.

“Those that will not collect as scheduled after the expiry of the notice will be treated as uncollected documents and we will dispose of them,” Kindiki said.

The Cabinet Secretary warned that applicants whose passports would be disposed of would also be required to reapply and pay an undisclosed fine.
