Tetu Member of Parliament Geoffrey Wandeto has called on legislators to up their game in terms of exercising their oversight role.
Speaking on Citizen TV’s Daybreak show, Wandeto said he believed the country is far from slaying corruption.
"Our country is facing corruption and wastage of resources; we’re far from slaying the dragon," he said.
Wandeto said the war on corruption needs both sides of government to deal with it fully and effectively.
He said the revelation by the Controller of Budget is just the tip of the iceberg and there could be other areas of decay in high-end areas in government.
“I sit in the Public Investment Committee of Parliament and every day we are treated to things of a similar nature,” Wandeto said.
The Tetu MP said as much as corruption has become a menace, we should not give up on fighting for a corruption-free nation.
He called on anti-corruption bodies to work together with legislators to ensure the issue is fully put to rest.
“We should give our people the confidence that we are in charge and know what we are doing in the war against corruption," he said.
The Controller of Budget Margaret Nyakang'o while appearing before the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) claimed that her salary had been inflated three times what her annual salary was.
Nyakang'o claimed this was similar to several other government officials.
"I found out that my salary was budgeted at three times what I am paid and it was like that for all the state officers," Nyakango claimed.
Moreover, she expressed concerns about what she attributed as lack of transparency in public debt arrangements.
She claimed that some public debts could not be accounted for nor identified while she was approving payments for the same.
"This lack of clarity regarding the nature and purpose of the debts raised red flags about potential financial mismanagement," she claimed.
