Kenya record higher number of crimes in FY 22/23 - Report

NCAJ noted that offences against persons remained the bulk of crimes over the years.

The country is presently recording the highest number of crimes compared to what was been registered in the last four years, a report by the Council on Administrative Justice shows. 

In the period under review, financial year 2022/23, 97,301 crimes were reported to the police, compared to 90,371 reported in the financial year 2018/2019.

In the financial year 2019/20, the number of crimes reported was 80,212, which decreased to 76,525 in 2020/21.

In the 2021/22 Financial Year, police received 85,539 reports of serious crimes. 

The annual report by the National Council for Administrative Justice (NCAJ) showed that of the 97,301 crimes reported, 23,875 were offences against persons.

NCAJ noted that offences against persons remained the bulk of crimes over the years.

Crimes against persons include assault, affray and creating disturbance.

In 2021/22, these crimes were 22,899 while in 2020/21 they were at 21,777.

In 2019/21, offences against persons were at 22,116 and in 2018/19 reports of the same total to 26,300.

"Over time, there was a significant increase in property-related crimes in 2022/23," NCAJ said.

Stealing was the second highly reported crime recording at 17,386 while offences concerning dangerous drugs were 8,077.

Four years ago, reports of stealing were 13,421, with offences on dangerous drugs being at 7,391.

Other penal code offences reported amounted to 11, 246.

This is an increase from the 9,293 offences reported in the 2021/22 financial year.

In 2022/23, homicide reports were 3,102 while robbery was at 3,530.

The least reported crimes included offences involving tourists being 46 which have dropped considerably from 97 in the financial year 2018/19.

This is however an increase from the last year, where the reported cases were 18.

Corruption was also among the lowest reported offences.

In 2022/23, the number of corruption allegations reported was 96, from 126 four years ago.

In 2021/22, corruption reports were 93.

Offences involving police officers have decreased from 184 in the 2018/2019 financial year to 131 in the 2022/23 year.
