Mombasa KCSE candidate electrocuted to death while trying to save her shoes

The deceased was electrocuted while trying to support herself on a hanging electricity wire.

A family in Mombasa is mourning their form four candidate who lost her life just after she had finished her Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education.

Leonida Atieno, aged 19 and a candidate at Kajembe secondary school in Mikindani, Jomvu sub county lost her life after she stepped on a live electricity wire in the Bangladesh area near her home.

According to a report from police the deceased had completed her last KCSE Biological Practical paper.

Mombasa Police Commander Stephen Matu confirmed the incident saying that it was caused by the heavy rains being experienced in Mombasa.

He said that the deceased was electrocuted while trying to support herself on a hanging electricity wire to get her shoes which were being swiped away by the floods.

"We received a report of a form four candidate at Kajembe secondary school who was electrocuted while entering her parent's house," he said.

"She had removed her shoes but they were swept away by water, in the process of going after them. She touched a live hanging electricity wire to support herself and by the time she was being rescued, she had lost her life." 

The Mombasa Police Commander called upon residents to be careful especially those living in lowland areas.

He called upon parents to also take care of their children during this rainy season

"I want to call upon members of the public to be a bit careful, personal security starts with an individual. We are sorry for the incident which happened on Friday at around noon," he said.
