Former Kirinyaga Woman Rep Purity Wangui Ngirici has urged Kenyans to exercise their patients with the Kenya Kwanza government.

Ngirici who ackowledged that the cost of living is tough, said that brighter days are coming and that Kenyans should give the government time.

"Nyinyi mtulie, mnakumbuka wakati wa Kibaki kwanza tulipiga kelele lakini baada ya miaka mbili tukafurahia ," she said on Saturday.

This loosely translates to: Be patient, you remember even during Kiabki's regime we made noise but after two years we were happy.

She was speaking in Kirinyaga county where President Ruto was launching construction of the Sagana-Kathaka-Thigùkù Road at Thigùkù, Ndia Constituency.

Ngirici, who is the board chair of Kenya Seed Company (KSC) told Kenyans to support and give the Ruto-led administration a chance to deliver.

" I know there is a real chance to deliver because this government has good plans for development," she added.

Cost of living has been a constant point of discussion, with successive governments pledging to lower it.

The Kenya Kwanza government isn’t different, even before coming into power, the government’s message on this key topic was clear;

“My government will lower the cost of living,” President William Ruto on September 13, 2023, after assuming office.

More than a year since he took that oath of office and Kenyans say their fortunes haven’t changed much.

 There are cries by Kenyans over the skyrocketing cost of living since the Kenya Kwanza administration took over.

Kenyans from all walks of life are living from hand to mouth.

Speaking last week during his State of the Nation Address, Ruto said the nation has been living large and way above her means, a situation he said must change.

"We must admit that as a country we had been living large and way beyond our means. The time has come to retire the false comforts," he said.

Putting an end to the talk of subsidising products like fuel due to skyrocketing prices, Ruto cited counterproductive subsidy interventions as one of the reasons Kenya has been stuck in debt.

The Kenya Economic Report 2023 dubbed 'Cost of Living and the Role of Markets' by the Kenya Institute for Public Policy Research and Analysis shows the consumer price index hit 7.7 per cent, the highest since 2018.

It is highest compared to 6.1 per cent in 2021, 5.4 per cent in 2020, 5.2 per cent in 2019, 4.7 per cent in 2018 and 8.1 per cent in 2017, breaching the maximum government target band of 7.5 per cent.
