Woman with poem to mark end of 8-4-4 system leaves crowd in stitches

8-4-4 imekamilika! Pamela Odongo on Thursday morning was cheered by the crowd at the Mtihani House when she presented a poem to mark the end of this curriculum. 

Pamela who comes from Migori County had written a poem to mark the end of the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education examination. 

"Kweli mbali tumetoka, kwa shule za miaka nane na tamati tumefika, somo 8-4-4 imefika ukingoni. Kweli hatutasahau mmefanya kazi tosha, na mkaongoza dau na kufika ufuoni," Pamela recited.

"Baraza la mtihani, ufanisi tumeona, amtokeo kupeana, tunawapa shukurani."

"Hongera watahini, tajimo tutawavisha, mmefika tamatini na kufanya kazi tosha, si rahisi kutahini, kazi mmekamilisha."

"Ninawaombea mema, kofia nawavulia kwa kufanya kazi vyema."

After finishing the poem which praised the previous system, the crowd clapped as Pamela took her seat. 

Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu is releasing the results of the KCPE today. 

This will be the last time the ministry will be releasing the exams as the country shifted to the Curriculum Based Competency system. 

The 2023 cohort was the last to sit the KCPE exams as the ministry works on phasing out the 8-4-4 curriculum.

"We have had the 8-4-4 system for the last 38 years since 1985 and we now phasing out that system. The number of candidates that we had this year was higher than any other year previously 1,415, 315 candidates," Machogu said. 

"There were no cases of cheating. No cases of any kind of malpractice. We only had six cases which were only attempts to cheat. Out of 1,415,315 candidates, the only cases that we had were six."

Over 1.4 million candidates sat the examination.
