Some lawmakers from Homa Bay County have asked the government to move with speed to assist victims of floods in the area.

The legislators claimed that over 500 families have been displaced by raging floods and desperately need help.

Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma, Adipo Kuome (Karachuonyo) and Nominated Senator Beatrice Ogolla termed the situation in the county as dire.

Addressing a press conference at Parliament Buildings on Wednesday, the lawmakers said the government needs to send relief supplies to the affected areas urgently.

“We are telling the government to focus on Homa Bay County, whatever is happening there is not something to joke with. Things are bad,” Kaluma said.

He said authorities tasked with coordinating government response to flood menace should treat Homa Bay as a priority.

"Homa Bay County is a no-go zone area. The area is flooded and the people there need help urgently,” Kaluma added.

Kuome said his constituency is completely submerged and the people need help urgently.

He said his constituents are suffering as they have no food and nowhere to go due to the floods.

“In Karachuonyo the whole area is under siege. Most parts are submerged in water and we need urgent intervention,” he stated.

Ogolla regretted that the floods have not only rendered the residents homeless but have also seen residents go hungry.

“We are telling the government to come to our aid because people are suffering. These floods have rendered our people homeless.”

More families in the flood-prone areas in Homa Bay County are leaving their homes after being displaced by raging floods following the ongoing El Nino rains.

At the Koyugi location within Karachuonyo Constituency, more than 100 people from Bala and Maswa villages were displaced from their homes after river Awach Tende broke its banks on Sunday night.
