All Kenyans and employers who are contributors to the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) will now be required to make their payments through the official government Paybill number 222222.
This is after the national health insurer announced that all payments should be made to the Paybill with immediate effect as per the President’s directive.
“The National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) notifies all members and employers that effective immediately, all NHIF payments through mobile money platforms shall only be made through the government Pay bill number 222222,” NHIF CEO Elijah Wachira said.
“This is in line with the Kenya Gazette No 16008 of 2022 and the Presidential directive designating the use of Pay bill number 222222 as the government’s single payment platform,” he added.
Under the new payment mode, Nhif members who wish to pay their contributions to the fund will be required to enter the paybill number then use NHIFM-ID number as the account number or NHIFP-ID Number if they are paying for any penalties accrued.
Employers on the other hand will make their contributions by entering the paybill number then enter NHIFE-Eslip number as the account number for contributions and NHIFEP-employer code for penalties.
Previously, members making their monthly contributions via mobile money were required to go to M-PESA Menu and click on Lipa Na Mpesa then enter Paybill number 200222 then enter their national ID number as the account number.
When making payment for penalties accrued, they would go to M-PESA Menu, click on Lipa Na Mpesa then PayBill 200222 then enter their national ID number with the letter ‘y’ at the end of the ID number as the account number; for instance 1234567890y.
NHIF is the latest institution to comply with the government's directive on the digital payment system (e-citizen).
Chief of Staff and Head of Public Service Felix Koskei last month lauded the government's move to go digital.
Revealing milestones achieved, Koskei announced that since government services became available on e-citizen, the state has been generating Sh281 million daily in revenue.
"So far, 250 Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) are fully onboard the e-Citizen, offering over 16,000 government services, up from 397 in June 2022, generating Sh281 million in daily revenue," he said in a statement.
e-Citizen is a platform that allows Kenyans to access government services such as the renewal of driving licenses, application of passports and business registration services.
The Chief of Staff noted that with full compliance, daily revenue will surpass the Sh1 billion daily target.
In addition, Koseki called on the government institutions still operating to pay bills and till numbers other than 222222 to close them down as per the Presidential Directive.
Last December, the government announced that all payments for government services shall be made through the e-citizen portal.
