Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi and his Kiharu counterpart Ndindi Nyoro are the most impactful Members of Parliament, a new survey shows.
The survey by Politrack Africa said Wanyonyi and Nyoro serving for their constituencies for the third and second consecutive terms respectively both scored 80.2 per cent to tie at the top.
The study said those interviewed named several projects associated with Wanyonyi (ODM) and Nyoro (UDA) as their reason for ranking their two as the most impactful lawmakers.
Voters hailed the Westlands MP for "procurement of school buses for Kihumbuini and New Kihumbuini primary schools in Kangemi, free and fair issuance of bursaries to students within Westlands Constituency, tarmacking and rehabilitation of roads such as Muiri road in Mountain View, Crescent road in Parklands, Githongoro road and Wambugu road."
They also commended him for donation of motorbikes to boda boda Sacco’s through the Boda Boda Economic Empowerment Programme and overseeing infrastructural development of learning institutions in the constituency.
UDA's Nyoro on the other hand was praised for his "Kiharu Masomo Bora Programme-which has seen fees reduced to Sh1,000 per term for all Kiharu Day Secondary Schools, provision of food and revision books to learners, construction and rehabilitation of roads and bridges among them Maragua River -Kiguru - Ndutumi - Githioro Road in Mugoiri Ward, Maragua Bridge, Kiguru - Kiratina/Kamaguta - Ndutumi - Githioro Road in Mugoi- ri Ward among others."
He was also praised for financing of schools’ infrastructural projects in the constituency such as Weithaga Primary School, Weithaga Mixed Secondary School, Mbari Ya Hiti Primary School, Nyakihai Primary School, Nyakihai Secondary School, Kiamuri Primary School , Kiamuri Secondary School , Kimathi Secondary School among others
The survey, whose findings were released on Sunday, was conducted between November 20 to December1, 2023 and those interviewed were Kenyan adults aged 18 years and above, who are registered voters.
The sample size was 4, 794 from all the 47 counties. Data collection methodology was Computer Assisted Telephone Interviews (CATI)
The survey had a margin of error of +/ - 3.4 per cent at 95 per cent confidence level.
The sampling methodology was random, multi-stage stratified sampling using PPS (proportionate to population size).
53 per cent of those interviewed were male while 47 were female with 52 per cent of the total coming from rural settings with the rest being from urban areas.
The study said Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa (UDA) and Embakasi East lawmaker Paul Ongili alias Babu Owino (ODM) tied at two scoring 79.6 per cent.
Barasa’s track record, according to those polled, include infrastructural development of schools in the constituency like construction of modern one-storey facility at Matili Fym Primary School, Makhonge FYM Primary School, and Sikhendu Primary School.
He was also commended for construction and rehabilitation of roads like Bahai-Kambini road, Nasusi-Mwangale-Marofu road, Kamukuywa-Nakalira Road among others.
MP Barasa was also hailed for his elimination of grass-thatched houses programme and establishment of the Kimilili ICT centre and library.
Babu was commended for the construction and refurbishment of several roads like the Tassia Central SDA road to Junction, River Bank, the road between Kwa Ndege to Kwa Kasim Tassia, road between Garage to Green corner at Juakali, road between Taj House to Mwalimu court, road between Kwa Ndege to Kite School at Tassia and construction of the road from Chokaa stage to Maua Primary school, Mihang’o.
The ODM MP was also cited for the construction of Assistant Chief’s office Utawala and undertaking infrastructural development in learning institutions like at the Maua Primary school in Mihang’o ward, Mihang’o Secondary School and issuance of bursary cheques throughout the constituency.
The third most impactful lawmaker, according to findings of the poll was Mavoko MP Patrick Makau (Wiper). He scored 79.1 per cent.
The MP was associated with infrastructural development of learning institutions in the constituency like the Kanaani girl’s secondary school, St Paul's Primary school in Athi River, Kaiani primary school, Kiasa primary schools, Ngwata PrimarySchool, Kyumbi Secondary School, St Paul’s Athi River Primary School, and Athi River secondary School among others.
He was also cited construction and rehabilitation of roads.
South Mugirango MP Silvanus Osoro, Bahati lawmaker Irene Njoki and Nabii Nabwera tied at number four scoring 78.5 per cent.
Wajir South MP Mohammed Adow, Abraham Kirwa (Mosop), Lillian Gogo (Rongo) tied at number five scoring 78.1 per cent.
Coming in at number six was Ronald Karauri (Kasarani), Adan Keynan (Eldas) and Edward Wakili (Gatanga) while Mark Nyamita (Uriri) was seven.
Three MPs tied at number eight- Githua Wamacukuru (Kabete), Kakai Bisau (Kiminini) and Brighton Yegon (Konoin).
Adams Kisanai (Keiyo North) was number nine and Patrick Munene (Igamba Ng’ombe) was ranked number 10.
The survey did not list the worst performing MPs but only named those who were in the top 35.
