Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has announced what long-distance drivers should do to curb accidents.

In a statement on Friday, Murkomen said that drivers must adhere to road safety guidelines to protect lives on the road.

The CS asked drivers to be aware of the dangers of fatigue, as it is one of the main causes of road accidents.

"Before you hit the road, ensure you have had enough sleep," Murkomen said.

He said drivers should start their trips at least an hour after waking up.

Murkomen said on long trips that take several days, drivers should aim to drive no more than eight to 10 hours each day.

He also asked drivers to take a break every four hours.

The CS said that long-distance public service vehicles should have two drivers to ensure that one rests after eight to 10 hours of driving.

This comes at a time when the majority of Kenyans are headed to their rural homes for Christmas and New Year season.

Government agencies have been calling upon Kenyans to exercise caution on the roads.

To curb recklessness, Inspector General of Police Japheth Koome ordered all police officers who are on leave to resume duties with immediate effect.

The announcement is part of the National Police Service's preparedness ahead of the festive season.

"To enhance police visibility and security in the Country, we have also directed all Officers who are currently on Leave to resume duty with immediate effect," the IG said.

The IG asked Kenyans to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity to authorities to tame any potential criminal activity.

"I wish to call upon members of the public to remain vigilant even as you celebrate, and report any crime or suspicious activities, to the nearest police station or through the police hotline numbers 999, 112, 911, and 0800 722 203," he said.
