Five people have sustained serious injuries in a road accident along the busy Nairobi-Mombasa highway in Machakos County.

Athi River South subcounty police commander Jos Mudavadi said several others sustained slight injuries during the incident that occurred at Luqman Corner near Maanzoni Lodge in Athi River on Wednesday.

Mudavadi said it was a self–involved accident involving a minibus belonging to UMOWA Sacco.

The incident was reported to Kyumbi police station as a self-involved serious injury road traffic accident report.

He said the accident happened at around 6.30 am. The occupants got injured after the passenger service vehicle overturned.

The police boss said the said vehicle was being driven by one Kaleli Muthoka from Mombasa general direction heading towards Nairobi direction when the incident occurred.

“Upon reaching the scene of the accident, a truck which was ahead of his vehicle suddenly stalled after its rear right wheels got off and it blocked both lanes of the dual carriageway,” Mudavadi told the Star by phone on Wednesday.

He said the minibus swerved to the right to avoid ramming into the truck.

“As he did this, he lost control of the vehicle and it overturned. As a result of the accident five passengers sustained serious injuries,” Mudavadi said.

Mudavada said the first passenger sustained a fracture on her right collar bone, the second – a 4-year-old minor got fractured on his right hand, another had a head injury and a cut on the right ear.

The fourth sustained a head injury and chest pains while the fifth had a head injury and left hand cut.

He said the quintet were rushed to Machakos Level 5 Hospital for treatment.

“Several others were rushed by good samaritans to unknown hospitals having suffered minor injuries,” Mudavadi said.

The wreckage was towed to Kyumbi police station pending inspection.

Mudavadi said they had launched investigations into the accident.
