  • Laparoscopy is sometimes called "minimally invasive surgery" or "keyhole surgery," because it requires smaller cuts than traditional, "open" surgery.
  • The use of smaller cuts has benefits including shorter hospital stays, less pain, faster recovery and smaller scars.

Kimbimbi Level Three Hospital in Kirinyaga County has successfully conducted its first Laparoscopy Surgery.

Laparoscopic surgery uses the aid of a laparoscope, a thin rod with a camera attached, to visualize the abdominal and pelvic cavities through tiny keyhole incisions.

In a statement on Tuesday, Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru said the surgery was led by Dr Madaraka Ogoye.

"This cost-effective method has been enabled by training our doctors and nurses and equipping the health facility with modern equipment. Thank you our healthcare team for your dedication to service delivery," she said.

According to a health publication by MedlinePlus, a laparoscope is used to help diagnose and sometimes treat conditions that develop in the belly or pelvis.

Laparoscopy is sometimes called "minimally invasive surgery" or "keyhole surgery," because it requires smaller cuts than traditional, "open" surgery.

The use of smaller cuts has benefits including shorter hospital stays, less pain, faster recovery and smaller scars.

It's usually done if imaging tests, such as X-raysultrasounds, and MRI scans, haven't provided enough information to confirm a diagnosis.

According to the publication, the test is often used to help diagnose digestive diseases, urinary disorders and disorders in the female reproductive system, which includes the uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes.
