The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council has vowed to collaborate with investigative agencies to unravel the circumstances under which the intern in Nakuru died.

The KMPDC in a statement condemned the death of Laban Langat, a medical intern at the Nakuru Level 5 Hospital on Saturday.

Langat's body was discovered in the trenches outside the Margaret Kenyatta Mother and Baby Wing on Saturday morning.

A postmortem conducted on the body of Langat showed he had been strangled.

KMPDC CEO David Kariuki said the death of the medic brought to light the occupational hazards that healthcare workers in the country work under.

“This senseless act of violence not only robs the country of skilled medical practitioners but also shakes the foundations of trust and safety that are essential for the well-being of society,” Kariuki said.

“KMPDC will collaborate closely with Nakuru Level 5 Hospital and relevant investigative agencies to establish the circumstances that led to the untimely death of Dr Langat."

Kariuki further called on the internship training centres to put in place necessary measures to prevent such occurrences in future.

“We call on the society to reflect on the value of those who dedicate their lives to healing others and to stand united against any form of violence targeting the healthcare workers,” Kariuki said.

According to a statement issued by Nakuru County Executive Member for Health Services, Roselyn Mungai, the medic’s body was discovered in the trenches outside the maternity wing at about 7 am on Saturday.

She claimed that the body, which was later moved to the hospital morgue by the police, had no physical injuries, adding that his items were also intact.

Langat has been serving the hospital as a medical intern since August 2023.

The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists, and Dentists Union (KMPDU) in a statement on Sunday called on the DCI to move with speed and establish the cause of his death.

"We implore the relevant authorities to expedite the process, ensuring that justice is served swiftly," KMPDU SG Davji Atellah said.

Atellah noted the death of the young medic under mysterious circumstances underscores the pressing need for heightened security measures within health facilities.

"We demand that county governments and hospital management prioritise the safety of healthcare workers, particularly medical interns," Atellah said.
