Five ex-Isiolo county officials arrested over Sh58m fraud claims

The suspects will be arraigned to the Isiolo Anti-corruption Court on Thursday January 18.

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission has arrested five former officials of Isiolo County to be arraigned in court on corruption charges relating to Sh58,560,000 procurement fraud.

The Commission's CEO Twalib Mbarak said the five are from a group of 13 who are suspected to have taken part in the offence.

It related to a tender for the supply and delivery of a fire engine which is alleged to have been corruptly awarded to a company during the Financial Year 2018/19.

The company is at the centre of a related investigation in Marsabit County involving a Sh62 million tender under similar supply and delivery of a fire engine.

The suspects will be arraigned at the Isiolo Anti-corruption Court on Thursday, January 18.

They have since been taken to the county EACC offices for processing and will be transferred to Isiolo Central Police Station awaiting the presentation to court.

Mbarak said one of the suspects is held at the EACC Integrity Centre Police Station.

Upon receiving information on the alleged fraud, the anti-graft body conducted investigations and submitted a report to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

"The DPP concurred with the recommendations of the Commission to charge the said 13 with wilful failure to comply with the law relating to procurement contrary to Section 45(2)(b) as read with 48(1) of the Anti-Corruption and Economic Acts No 3 of 2003," Mbarak added.

He also agreed that they are charged with unlawful acquisition of public property and abuse of office.

EACC has directed the remaining eight suspects to immediately report to the EACC Isiolo Regional Office or the nearest EACC office.

The Commission assured that it remains firmly focused on its mandate and will continue to enforce the law against all persons engaging in anti-corruption offences.
