At least two people have lost their lives and one seriously injured in separate road accidents on the Mombasa-Nairobi highway, in Samburu, Kwale county.

One accident involved a boda boda rider and a pillion passenger who were run over by a trailer and died on the spot.

Area police chief Lydia Mambo said the rider was speeding and tried to overtake but had miscalculated the distance and hit the oncoming lorry.

"The rider was carrying a woman and was overtaking. Unfortunately, he hit the trailer at the front," she said.

The trailer was moving towards Mombasa from Nairobi and the motorcycle was coming from the opposite direction.

The rider hit the front light headlamp, lost control and was overrun by the lorry.

The accident happened at around 11:20am at Makina ya Chini.

The bodies were taken to Voi, Moi Referral Hospital Mortuary for postmortem.

The trailer and motorcycle were towed to Mackinnon police station yard awaiting inspection and further investigations.

The other accident occurred on Thursday at 3am at Mackinnon Road trading centre near Governor Hotel on the Mombasa-Nairobi Highway within Samburu.

Mambo said the woman was crossing from the right to the left side of the road when she was knocked by an unknown speeding vehicle.

The driver did not stop.

She said the impact threw the woman in the middle of the road and sustained severe forehead injuries.

Mambo said the woman who it is suspected was drunk, was taken to Ginger Hospital for treatment, and is recuperating.

Last month, two people died and several others were seriously injured in a fatal road accident in Taru within Samburu.

The accident involved a bus and trailer which left two people dead.

The OCPD advised motorists and boda boda riders to be vigilant and observe traffic rules and safety measures.

She asked amateur riders to consider using alternative roads and keep off highways.

"There is no need to risk your lives by competing with big vehicles on the highways. There are so many roads that are safe to use," she said.

Mambo said passengers should also protest against reckless driving.

She urged passengers to caution drivers and report them if they speed or drive under the influence of drugs.
