Mzee Jaramogi, Kenya's founding Vice President, died 30 years ago on January 20, 1994, in  Kisumu.

Raila, who is Jaramogi's youngest son, organised the memorial service to celebrate and honour his legacy and place in Kenya’s history.

The opposition chief invited renowned scholars, pan-Africanists, thought leaders and journalists to speak at the event.

Jaramogi was a prominent political figure and one of the leaders of Kenya’s freedom fighters who helped secure the country’s independence.

He was born in October 1911.

He was appointed minister for home affairs in 1963, and in 1964 became vice president under founding father Mzee Jomo Kenyatta.

In September 2023, Kuria detailed his close ties with the Odinga family that dates back many years ago.

"As I stand here as trade CS, I remember the journey of myself, my brother Governor James Orengo and Senator Oburu Odinga have come from.

"On January 20, 1994, we were here a whole 29 years to bury Jaramogi Oginga Odinga," he said then during the launch of Siaya County Aggregation and Industrial Park (CAIP)in Siaya.

"A man who instructed Otieno Kajwang to represent me in court and get an injunction that stopped me from being expelled from UoN," Kuria said.
