Patients who had been admitted at Canon Medical Hospital in Kanduyi along the Webuye-Malaba highway found it rough after auctioneers invaded the facility to evict them due to the piled-up rent.

Wycliffe Wekesa, the client, who had admitted his niece to the facility, told Journalists that the eviction incident has shocked many.

“On Sunday I brought my niece here to get medication and everything was normal during the admission time. I couldn't imagine this drama would crop- up,” Wekesa said.

Wekesa says that while still at home preparing to visit the facility to check whether his niece had responded to drugs on Monday morning, he received information that the facility had been invaded by auctioneers.

“Immediately, I rushed to the hospital to check how my niece was fairing on. Upon arrival, I spotted a huge crowd outside the hospital with security heightened by armed police officers,” Wekesa added.

Wekesa stated that he found his niece among the patients locked up in a room inside the hospital. No doctor was present.

"I immediately transferred the patient to another facility to get treated."

He said that evictors interfered with everything.

Wekesa urged relevant bodies to ensure that they scrutinize those with intentions of starting private hospitals if they can offer quality services and pay doctors.

He alleges that it is not the first incident where the facility is being auctioned.

He also called on Health and Sanitation CS Susan Nakhumicha to deal with those exploiting patients through the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF).

“This incident is the third one because last time the evictors came and carried equipment. We thought the facility management had sorted the mess,” he said.

In his address, Sam Kuria, Canon Hospital Chairman, accused the landlord of breaching the agreement.

He revealed that they had agreed that he would finish the incomplete-storey building and that would cover rent for several months.

Kuria admitted that there had been a cold war between the hospital management and the landlord.

He said that the facility owes the landlord Sh7 million arguing that currently, the facility is not operating in the entire building because it is still incomplete.

The facility Chairman says that the landlord served them with a short eviction notice.

He took the matter before court saying they were granted time to defend themselves why they hadn’t paid the rent.

He maintained that the hospital would not shift, encouraging his clients to visit the facility for services once the cases settled.

“We would have been served with an advance eviction notice rather than invading the hospital and throwing hospital items,” Kuria noted.
