Azimio leader Raila Odinga has disclosed how insiders who worked with former President Mwai Kibaki (late), led to the break up of the National Alliance Rainbow Coalition (NARC).

Speaking on Wednesday, Raila said Kibaki was feeble because of the car accident he had been involved in and a lot of things were being run by his people.

He said the elite who controlled things around the third president were opportunists and they created an ideology of the once very strong party splitting.

The former Prime Minister said their underhand dealings got them to the point of the 2005 referendum that split the coalition.

The split created one side that supported Raila symbolised by an (Orange) and the other that backed Kibaki (Banana).

After the referendum and in the run-up to the 2007 election, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and the Party of National Unity (PNU) were born.

"Unfortunately, because Kibaki had suffered the accident, Kibaki was infirm, some opportunists took charge and created an ideology of split. These are the elite around Kibaki. They are the ones who created the bad blood in Narc, which ended with an eventual split of Narc and that is why we had a problem at the Bomas of Kenya. And we ended up with Oranges and Bananas and then we ended up with ODM and PNU," Raila said.

The former Prime Minister who spoke during the celebration of PNU's 15 anniversary insisted that the two parties have a common origin.

He noted that party splitting is not a bad thing because it helps build more on a country's democracy.

Raila added that when NARC came into power, Kenya was named the most optimistic country in the world.

He said at the time, Kenyans believed that all was possible and were fearless.

"They said in leading international journals including the New York Times and the Times of London that Kenyans were the most optimistic people in the world at that time. Kenyans believed yote yawezekana because they were unbwogable and that was the spirit of NARC."
