Former Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho now says that the African continent is set for a new era of hope, should Azimio leader Raila Odinga become the new African Union Commission chairperson.

In a statement on Saturday, Joho said that with Raila's experience and wisdom, Africa will be uniquely positioned for a rebirth.

He described the former Prime minister as a man who has always put the country and the people above his personal needs.

"The life journey of Raila Odinga is full of milestones of statesmanship and sacrifice. He has always ferociously fought for democracy, equity, and humanity throughout his political calling by putting Kenya and its people, above his personal needs," Joho said.

"He is the bedrock of democracy and the epitome of selflessness. He stands as a fearless leader, and his exceptional record as an ardent Pan-African is remarkable. I am not only optimistic but also supremely confident that as Chairman of the African Union Commission, Africa is poised for a new era full of hope for its children."

The Orange Democratic Movement deputy party leader further noted that he is confident Raila will steer the continent and its people to shared progress and prosperity.

He added that with Raila at the helm of the AU Commission, the continent will claim its rightful place in the world.

"I therefore congratulate my Party Leader Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga for this courageous step of putting his name forward for consideration for the Chairmanship of the African Union Commission. Baba, I wish you the very best."

Opposition leader Raila Odinga on Thursday made public his intentions to vie for the African Union Commission chairmanship.

His bid comes at a time when the tenure of incumbent Moussa Faki of Chad is coming to an end.

Raila insisted that he was the right candidate for the job.

"Today, I want to make it public that I am ready to go for the chairmanship of the Africa Union... I am inclined to accept the challenge. Should the leadership of Africa want my services, I am ready and offer myself to be of service to this continent," Raila said.
