Leaders of the ruling United Democratic Alliance have endorsed Azimio leader Raila Odinga to become the next chairperson of the African Union Commission.

Speaking at a press briefing on Saturday, UDA secretary general Cleophas Malala said the party believes Raila can lead the continent in the desired direction.

He said Raila's immense pool of experience will most certainly be of value to the African continent.

The SG added that the former Prime minister's strive for democratic reforms in the country will also be reflected in the region and the continent as a whole.

"He measures up to Africa's greatest as one of Africa's greatest sons. Raila was at the forefront of the greatest leaders who championed the entrenchment of the tenets of democracy and the rule of law in Kenya and Africa," Malala said.

"Today, as the continent goes into deep waters seeking emancipation from perpetual dependency on external support, a man of his stature can chart our path and save the vessel of emancipation of Africa to greater heights and the desired destination."

Malala said that while they are political competitors with the Azimio leader, UDA understands the need to come together as a country to support Raila's quest to become the AU Commission chairperson.

He insisted that their statement is not political, but one of patriotism that is aimed at rallying the country towards the direction of supporting Raila Odinga.

"We wish him great success in his bid and we look forward to his leadership and contribution to the unity and prosperity of our continent," he said.

National Assembly Majority whip Silvanus Osoro in his remarks said that the party will be holding a parliamentary group meeting as Kenya Kwanza part of the agenda is Raila's candidature for the AU Commission chairmanship.

Osoro insisted that there is no one better placed for the AUC chairmanship than Raila.

"He's created huge networks in West, East and South Africa, has immense experience in terms of leadership, served as Prime minister of this republic, he has also served in opposition putting the government in check. There can be no better person to take the chairmanship of the African Union than Raila Amollo Odinga," he said.

"As a coalition and as a party, specifically the ruling UDA, we have decided to put our foot down and support Raila."

Opposition leader Raila Odinga on Thursday made public his intentions to vie for the African Union Commission chairmanship.

His bid comes at a time when the tenure of incumbent Moussa Faki of Chad is coming to an end.

During his announcement, Raila said that he was the right candidate for the job.

"Today, I want to make it public that I am ready to go for the chairmanship of the Africa Union... I am inclined to accept the challenge. Should the leadership of Africa want my services, I am ready and offer myself to be of service to this continent," Raila said.
