Namibia's President Nangolo Mbumba on Sunday honoured the legacy of his predecessor Hage Geingob as he was laid to rest.
In a heartfelt speech, Mbumba eulogised the former President as a national hero.
“Today(Sunday), we bid farewell to a national hero, a courageous freedom fighter, and a torchbearer of freedom, justice, and equality,” remarked President Mbumba.
Reflecting on Geingob’s contributions, he stated, “He excelled as a unifying Chairman, the first Prime Minister, and the third President of Namibia. His valiant exploits contributed to our independence, and today, he joins the brave heroes and heroines at Heroes Acre.”
President Mbumba emphasized the former Head of State's relentless commitment by quoting the Gospel of Matthew.
“Dear Comrade Geingob, you have fought valiantly and consistently for Namibia and the oppressed. Now, it’s time for you to rest, to leave the worries of this world behind," he added.
Addressing the mourning family, President Mbumba assured them that the whole of Namibia was with them during this period of mourning.
“The entire nation stands shoulder to shoulder with you in this solemn moment," he stated.
Addressing other Presidents and dignitaries who graced the Funeral, Mbumba couldn't be more thankful for their kindness in standing with Namibia.
"To Your Excellencies who have travelled far, take comfort in the wonderful legacy he leaves us – a legacy of universal solidarity and extraordinary service to humanity," he noted
Closing with a commitment to governance, President Mbumba affirmed, “We will uphold the Constitution, be transparent, accountable, and inclusive. The Second Struggle for Economic freedom will continue with urgency until shared prosperity and social justice are achieved for all citizens,"
The late President Geingob, surrounded by his wife, Madame Monica Geingos, and children, succumbed to his battle with cancer early this month.
The then Vice President Nangolo Mbumba (now President), delivering the sombre news, expressed deep regret, stating, "It is with utmost sadness that I inform you that our beloved Dr Hage G. Geingob has passed on. Despite the tireless efforts of his medical team, President Geingob, sadly, did not recover."
Geingob returned from the United States of America on January 31, 2024, following a two-day novel treatment for cancerous cells.
He had courageously disclosed his diagnosis to the public just a month ago.
Having assumed office in 2015, Geingob was in his second and final term, serving as the chief architect of Namibia's Constitution and a pivotal figure in the liberation struggle.
